The homeowners used a combination of three Invisible Structures products for this project: Rainstore3, Grasspave2 and Gravelpave2. The existing soil is a clay-based soil that turns to a vaseline consistency when wet. The owners used a single layer of Rainstore3 filled with sandy gravel as a base course structure to shore up the foundation of their project and instantly transform the loading capacity to exceed H20. Above the Rainstore3, they installed Gravelpave2 over the higher traffic area and Grasspave2 over the lower traffic area to replace the constantly cracking concrete and create a more park-like environment in their yard. The result is beautiful.

K. Dakin Design was looking for a unique and beautiful way to build two patios on the back of this residential house. Gravelpave2 was a great solution. Normally, a unsupported crusher run (breeze) is used in the space between the flagstones. Here, a larger gravel was filled into Gravelpave2. Gravelpave2 will prevent the rutting, erosion, and settling normally associated with the crusher run. The Gravelpave2 supported flagstone patio will provide a lower maintenance and longer lasting patio. This patio with water feature and integral sandstone pavers. This project really shows off what the Gravelpave2 can do to reinforce gravel laterally and vertically.

Lakehead University Orillia Campus implemented a unique system to capture stormwater from the adjacent road that relies on Rainstore3. The stormwater will flow into a catch basin, move through a filtering system, flow to a chamber for storage, and then the water is pumped to the above ground water feature. The underground chamber was designed to capture, retain and harvest grey water for reuse in addition to being connected to the city’s storm system. The grey water feeds both the surface pond and toilet flushing for the building.

For over a century, the Washington National Cathedral has dedicated itself to providing a walk to the Cathedral that provides a respite from the city... offering wonder and charm and a taste of Mother Nature. Unfortunately, the area was plagued by flooding, erosion and run-off issues. Runoff washed out vegetation and rutting, pooling and the loss of vegetation began to impact the lushness and beauty of the forest.
By installing Rainstore3 in the Olmsted Forest the runoff from the stormwater could be captured and allowed to seep into the ground to prevent further erosion and promote the regrowth of the lost vegetation and paths were clear of pooling and the riverbank was rebuilt as water levels running through became lower.

This comprehensive design team planned a system to collect rainwater from Epler Hall and neighboring King Albert Hall. The water is collected from the roof and ground level plaza area. Rainwater is then conveyed through downspouts to river rock splash boxes at ground level. The river rock splash bed delivers the water to small decorative conveyance streams made up of exposed Belgium blocks. The water meanders through the block pattern as it travels across the plaza, dubbed “Eco-Alley.” The rainwater is channeled into raised planters which double as bio-swales. Some of the water is used for the decorative vegetation in the planters but the majority of the water filters down into an underground stormwater storage chamber. Irrigation water is ready to use. Toilet water gets pumped into a mechanical room inside the Hall, goes through an additional sand filter, UV disinfection, and then gets pressurized. Estimations conclude nearly 110,000 gallons of potable water are saved annually. This equates to be an annual savings of nearly $1000 for water/sewer cost for College Housing Northwest and ultimately, PSU students and Oregon Taxpayers. Designers incorporated many other environmentally friendly and sustainable features into Epler Hall. Wind cooled stack ventilation, passive solar heating and solar lighting, heat recapture, and providing for alternative transportation. Because of the successful design, Epler Hall has received a Silver Rating from the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard.

rom an article in Stormwater Solutions —- Storing water for aboveground water features at an office park - simple, right? Not so fast. The Santa Monica, Calif., Water Garden office park does not have a normal, garden-variety water feature. A series of walkways, a river, gardens, multiple pools, fountains, an amphitheater and other amenities are located on 17 acres of a complex manmade topography. Civil engineering firm Psomas and landscape architectural firm KSA Design Studio had to find a way to store the water under the “oasis in the city” in the most efficient way possible
The elaborate site called for nine different depths of water-storage chambers from 30 to 110 cm high. A modular and design-flexible solution was needed. Psomas turned to a product called Rainstore3 – a modular-underground water-storage system. It is engineered to be stackable in varying heights and can support H-20 loading requirements. Additionally, its geocells are manufactured from 100% recycled content. Every available depth from 30 to 110 cm, in 10-cm (4-in.) increments, was provided with Rainstore3. The entire water-feature network required more than 9,000 units of the product. “[It was] A big puzzle,” said Steve Lacap, project lead designer for KSA, referring to placing the Rainstore3 product to level out the landscape and prepare for the final grade. “Existing soils were as deep as 6 ft in some places.”

Dealing with the high water table is problematic for Tulane University and all of New Orleans. Designers from Gould Evans Associates and Lee Ledbetter & Associates needed a way to store the site's runoff from stormwater while maximizing the limited area for an athletic practice field. Rainstore3 was chosen for the detention system in one chamber with two heights: one section at 5 units high (50cm) and the other area at 7 units high (70cm). Precautions had to be made in the design of the system as the water table will exert upward force on the chambers at different times. Designer ended up wrapping nearly all of the sides of the chamber (leaving the top for infiltration) with a impermeable membrane. Calculations were made to see how buoyant this made the Rainstore3 system. Then designers could counteract the upward buoyancy pressure with static pressure from the cover material and athletic field surface turf preventing the system from "floating" or popping up. The chamber is capable of holding 1428 cubic meters (50,000 cu ft) of stormwater.
