Animal Transfer Stations
The AllerGard™ ES (Energy Saver) model NU-620 is an Animal Transfer Station modeled after our Class II Biological Safety Cabinet design to offer maximum personnel, product, and environmental protection during sensitive cage changing procedures while maintaining mobility in the vivarium environment.
The NU-620M uses an impeller and HEPA filter in both the supply module at the top of the unit as well as in the exhaust module at the bottom to turn the work zone in between into a vertical “piston of air.” The transfer station’s supply impeller at the top of the “piston” draws air down through a prefilter and propels it past a supply HEPA filter and towards the work zone to create a sterile air environment. From there, the exhaust impeller at the bottom of the “piston” pulls the downflow air through the slots in the work surface to provide allergen containment. It continues to suck all the air past an exhaust pre-filter before pushing it out an exhaust HEPA filter at the bottom of the transfer station. This “push-pull” airflow passes through a work surface divided by air grills into clean and dirty areas and a work zone configured with the deep wells and feeder holders that the Innovive™ cage changing process requires.
The NU-640 is a full console model with a mechanical auto-rising base stand and built-in ergonomic footrest. With an extra large 14 inch (356 mm) hinged access opening and only a 78.25 inch (1988) unit height, this animal handling biological safety cabinet easily handles large rat cages in the smallest of vivarium laboratories. This BSC unit comes standard with heavy-duty reinforced casters and fits through most standard doorways for extra mobility. Like all other NuAire airflow products, the NU-640 utilizes a single ultra-high efficiency DC ECM motor with forward facing fan blades that reduces overall energy consumption and automatically compensates for variances in filter loading. A built-in work tray prop-up rod allows easy access to the single mesh pre-filter and makes cleaning the work zone a breeze.

Laboratory Layout And Design Consideration For Biosafety Cabinet Installations
When designing or renovating a laboratory space the proper placement of equipment, especially biosafety cabinets (BSCs) and other devices that are impacted by airflow and personnel patterns, it is important to ensure their containment performance and to allow for appropriate process flow for both scientific procedures and safety purposes. In this article, we will compare different BSC placement best practice recommendations visually and propose example placements of specific equipment based on common laboratory uses within the bounds of those clearances.
This information is not meant to be used in place of discussions with laboratory users or review of their documented needs such as can be found in a feasibility study, basis of design (BOD), or program of requirements (POR). It is meant to be a conversation starter for architects, engineers, and lab planners to begin discussions with their clients about the biosafety and biocontainment best practices for lab layout and placement of containment devices, specifically BSCs, in relation to other scientific equipment, building features, and lab furnishings.
