Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
What is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)?
Expanded Polystyrene or EPS is a lightweight, rigid, closed cell insulation material. Because of EPS' ability to trap air inside each cell, the cell is stable with no volatile gases trying to escape, reducing thermal resistance. Air is nature's best insulator!
EPS captures air, creating one of the best and most reliable insulation materials. This process delivers high R-values and moisture resistance that last, equaling long-term energy and money savings. Additionally, EPS has always been CFC and HCFC-free.
PermaTherm's EPS production is 100% recycled at the production phase allowing us to reduce manufacturing waste and landfill contribution.
Benefits of PermaTherm's EPS Insulated Cores:
High Thermal Resistance: EPS is an excellent insulator for any building.
Long-lasting Thermal Conductivity: In layman's terms, the heat energy transfer is blocked by inert air, which allows your building to stay at desired temperatures and use less electricity.
Lightweight Insulation: With a lighter core, our insulated metal panels are easier to ship, store, and handle during installs on the job site.
Better for the Environment: EPS provides better energy savings, can be recycled and produces less on-the-job waste.
The Physical Properties of PermaTherm's EPS foam insulation utilized in our panel were tested by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. as prescribed by test measures from the Standard Mechanical Code and the International Mechanical Code, and are described as follows.

Select a Panel Color & Call Us!
PermaTherm insulated metal panels can be crafted in a variety of colors and can help add a distinctive look. There are some considerations with color. The bulk of Permatherm's panels are created with a Polar white finish as it the best performing color combination for thermal reflectivity and likewise thermal performance. Polar white also delivers the best light reflectivity minimizing interior lighting needs and industrial applications. Polar white is the industry standard and, as a result, we continually stock Polar White.
PermaTherm does not recommend dark colors with high potential for solar heat gain on the exterior surfaces of coolers or freezers.
Custom color paint systems can be applied to set your facility apart. Any custom choices require more lead times as the colors need to be applied during the coating process and may increase costs based on the colors selected and the amount of material required.
With over 30 years of experience serving customers with insulated metal panels, we want our customers to be happy. If you want a custom color, we can make it happen. A PermaTherm team member is just a phone call away with any questions you may have regarding color selections. We are here for you and your future facility!
Pipe Insulation
PermaTherm expanded polystyrene pipe insulation products and systems are designed, manufactured and fabricated exclusively by PermaTherm, Inc. EPS insulation systems are designed specifically for use in cold and chilled service pipe insulation systems and compare very favorably against other insulation systems, and in particular offers the highest ratio of thermal resistance (R-value) per unit cost. For instance, Dow Styrofoam (blue) XPS has essentially the same R-value (4.86) as EPS but costs on average at least 20% more. Note Foamular XPS advertises a higher R-value, yet uses chemical blowing agents to boost R-value and these blowing agents eventually diffuse out of the cells. Note also that EPS and XPS are available in comparable compressive strengths.
Bottom-line, both forms of rigid insulation will provide the same support in like psi rated products.
Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is one of the frequently-used insulants in cold-service mechanical insulation applications within the ranges of -297°F to 165°F (-183°C to +74°C). XPS is manufactured by both Dow Chemical (blue) and Owens Corning (pink), among others. The physical properties of each manufacturer are materially different, and must be objectively assessed during insulant comparisons and selection.
PermaTherm supplies complete polyiso (PIR) cold pipe insulation systems, for chilled water down to cryogenic applications. PermaTherm controls every step of the process from fabrication to application of vapor barriers and jackets, and assistance in calculation of the bill-of-materials (including accessories) as well as boxing and shipping. Polyiso is different than XPS and EPS since it is a thermoset rigid foam that retains its rigidity up to and beyond 300°F (+169°C), yet while having other physical properties comparable to XPS – – at a lower cost.
Twenty-five years ago, PermaTherm was part of a team that specified, designed and installed cold piping and insulation systems. The team was a single source solution provider, and we have evolved into a multi-insulant system provider. Rather than take chances with components and debating the advantages with clients, we listen to our clients and provide them their chosen insulant – – while taking ownership and creating the requisite added value.
Polyisocyanurate for mechanical pipe insulation systems is manufactured by only 4 acceptable U.S. suppliers, two of which have considerably more credibility in the market: ITW Insulation that is the sole distributor of PIR branded by Dow® Chemical as Trymer", and Dyplast Products® whose brand is ISO-C1® (and ISO-HT® for higher temperature applications up to 350°F). Trymer and ISO-C1 have comparable properties, yet the end-users should evaluate differences and costs given the particular applications.
